Major League, Major Impact
After a lengthy career in Major League Baseball, Jamie Moyer, his wife Karen, and their children wanted to settle in a family-friendly community where they could create a lifetime of memories. “This is really the first time we’ve been able to settle as a family, so it feels amazing to be surrounded by great friends in a wonderful environment like Rancho Santa Fe,” revealed Karen. With Jamie now retired from professional baseball, both he and Karen are devoted to the foundation they created to help children across the country.
According to Jamie and Karen, the Moyer Foundation started in 2000 with the mission to aid children in distress. Along the way the foundation created Camp Erin and Camp Mariposa. “Camp Erin is the largest national network of free bereavement camps for children and teens with 46 locations nationwide, including a camp serving children in every Major League Baseball city. Camp Mariposa is a first-of-its-kind free camp for children ages nine to 12 impacted by substance abuse in their families. There are eight locations nationwide,” said Karen. Both camps have provided support to children in the San Diego area since 2008. Jamie and Karen encourage anyone who is interested in helping out either through donations or volunteer opportunities to visit www.moyerfoundation.org. “For example, our 9th Annual Celebrity Golf Classic will take place Oct. 23 to 24. There are many ways to get involved with this event,” related Karen.
Jamie and Karen were recently recognized for their dedication to the community with the 2015 Community Spotlight Award. The award was presented by LEAD San Diego, an organization that aims to help develop and recognize civically engaged leaders. “We were completely honored to be in a room full of amazing people all committed to making the San Diego community a better place. We look forward to learning more about the needs in the community and how we can continue to help,” stated Karen.
In addition to their commitment to the Moyer Foundation, Jamie and Karen are parents to eight children, with two sons playing professional baseball, two daughters in college, and four kids in grade school. “We are an active family and all the kids are athletes,” stated Jamie.
In their spare time Jamie enjoys gardening and Karen loves to cook. The family can often be seen together at the San Diego Zoo, the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club, and Dog Beach.
