Laura Moon and Rachel Seidel, graduates of Canyon Crest Academy and Rancho Santa Fe residents, have earned the Girl Scout Gold Award – the organization’s highest honor – for their outstanding leadership and commitment to taking action in their community. In order to qualify for their award, each girl had to develop a project that made a contribution to their community.

For her project, Laura saw a lack of opportunities for student musicians to perform for anyone other than their parents, so she started a series of community concerts that allowed youth to perform in different venues for diverse audiences. Rachel educated women and children at the Family Recovery Center about nutrition, exercise, and smart shopping. She earned funds for her project by recycling.

Laura and Rachel are among 43 Girl Scouts in San Diego and Imperial Valley who earned the Gold Award this year. Just five percent of Girl Scouts nationwide achieve this level of recognition.
