A short documentary called Take Me Home Huey, featuring Rancho Santa Fe-based artist Steve Maloney, was chosen as the opening night film at the San Diego GI Film Festival held in September. The film documents Steve’s transformation of a Vietnam-era helicopter, Huey #174, that was shot down in combat in 1969 and later rescued from an Arizona boneyard, into a powerful work of art. The piece is meant to honor Vietnam War veterans as well as bring awareness to the mental health issues many veterans face when they return home. “Take Me Home Huey” also refers to a song commissioned by Steve – written, composed, and sung by Jeanie Cunningham – about the role that Huey helicopters have played in conflict zones.

Steve Maloney is a contemporary artist who often works with repurposed materials to create mixed media pieces. Learn more about Steve and the Take Me Home Huey project at www.takemehomehuey.org
